Tokyo Series

A series created during my three-week residency in Tokyo, Japan, at Almost Perfect.

I have a number of painting series named after the cities that inspired a change in my practice through the change of setting and a mindset while and before I was creating a body of work. The Tokyo series is a great example of this. Directly after my Fields exhibition in Detroit, featuring almost door-sized paintings - I traveled to Tokyo for a short 3-week residency to reset my mind and my creativity. The residency did exactly that and more. With the forced simplicity of life, small spaces, and essential things, I create 29 small individual paintings in new experimental materials. I also had experiences & made friends with other creators and international travelers that I will have memories with for a lifetime. The trip completely brought me back to my core, exposed me to a fresh and new perspective and culture, and closer to some material-use and community-connectivity principles I adhere to, in a completely new and transforming ways.

Linen Collection

The linen canvases were the first easy materials I bought in Tokyo - as clearance materials from Bumpodo art supply, in Tokyo. Each piece is 100x150mm.

Leather Collection

All leather was bought as scraps from a local maker in Taito-ku, Tokyo.
Each piece is 100x150mm, stretched on scrap-wood frames built in Kuki, Saitama, by Paco at Patio Workshop.

Silk Collection

All silk was bought as scraps from a local maker in Taito-ku, Tokyo.
The medium-sized pieces are 150x230mm and the large are 300x380mm, stretched on scrap-wood frames built in Kuki, Saitama by Paco at Patio Workshop.
