Horsey

A series of phone wallpapers and accompanying text written by my father all inspired by a digital illustration I made in 2016 of a rabbit named Horsey.

Horsey sat at the bar, relaxed, his arm on the bar, the cigarette smoke curling in lazy swirls past his face. He was waiting for his friend Pink to show up, but wasn’t even sure she would come. So he finished his second Martini, the glass in front of him and slowly smoked his cigarette.

The bartender was a big Belgian Hare, but even though Horsey came here fairly often, couldn’t remember his name. It didn’t matter. The hare was a good bartender, he would answer to anything and was always friendly, working for those tips.

Horsey knocked the ashes off his cigarette and looked in the mirror behind the bar. Things were fairly low lit and so he had only himself to look at. “Looking dapper in my yellow shirt with black high collar” he thought. Ears were upright but tight up against each other. A nice shade of chocolate brown fur covered his face and paws. He sighed and looked at his little paws. “It’s been a while since these have seen any digging or hard running. I don’t even know if I can even hop anymore.” Walking was the thing these last ten years. Up on hind legs mimicking the old human race. Everything was to mimic what the humans had before they disappeared. Someone sidled up next to him, sliding on a bar stool.

“Hey Pink,” he said, circling his paw and cigarette in the air.

“Hey Horsey,” she said. “How’s the Martini’s here?”

“Oh fine, I guess. Their best is the Timothy Hay and Yogurt Martini.” She made a face and said, “That does not sound like a good Martini.”

“Oh well,” Horsey said, “I just made it up anyway. I’m drinking straight pond water and vitamin mix.”

“Oh Horsey,” Pink said, running one paw up his ears and then flicking it, “You’re always halfway depressed. What’s eating at you today?”

“Nothing really,” he said and forced a smile at her. “And did I tell you that you look lovely tonight Pink? Where did you get that stunning dress?” She smiled and leaned over and said, “You know that you gave me this Horsey, and I always wear it just for you.” She signaled to the Bartender and asked for another round for Horsey and the same thing for her.
